It's the very fact that many people affected by the Robodebt abomination were PAYG taxpayers themselves for a period in the financial year they were also unemployed that caused the averaging miscalculation. If someone is simply unemployed for 52 weeks there's nothing else to tally. It's when the person is unemployed for one period then employed for another that the government invoked its averaging miscalculation. That the government persisted with its extortion racket long after it was aware of the miscalculations tells you all you need to know about their morality. The coalition until the last 2 months have spent a quarter of a century demonising the unemployed and relied on the lack of regard the community holds the unemployed to orchestrate its racket. The courts should have taken this into account and delivered an eye wateringly punitive judgment as a deterrent against a repeat of the conduct.
