Long term investors usually place their resources in the form of money with a commercial organisation (through the marketplace by buying "shares") so that it can be used to employ their fellow citizens in the creation of a product or service of value to us humans.
Hopefully, what is created will be of greater value than the input of the labour. If so, the investor will get to share in that greater value.
Our fellow citizens do the same which is how we are employed and together we form a feedback system called a "society".
Over time this will grow into a vast and complex civilization such as that enjoyed in this country.
Shorting is the method by which this marketplace takes on more of the attributes of the casino.
