If you don't own it you can't sell it... You can't go to your neighbours holiday house that they consider a long term investment (therefore aren't bothered by short term fluctuations as long as its in the same condition when they get it back) and ask to sell it with the promise to buy it back before a determined date or when it proves most profitable for yourself and return it to them. Why allow to do it with equities?
