    A great book to read is "Reminiscences of a Stock Operator" - about "Boy Plunger" a famous market shorter from the late 19th and early 20th century.

    At one stage, when the markets are dead because there is no longer any credit (sound familiar?) the head of the NYSE asks him to please stop shorting to stop killing the financial markets.

    Well worth the time.
