Ban on naked short selling effective until further notice

Govt concerned about transparency of short sales involving the use of borrowed stock

Draft legislation to require the disclosure of covered short sales.

intends to intro draft legislation in spring sittings which run to Decmeber 08

not intending to place a permanent ban on covered short selling

The RBA supports this position

the RBA issued its financial stability review and has been discussing ways of improving the disclosure of securities lending activity.

discussing possible amendments to the Financial Stabilty Standards to require the ASX to collect and publish securities lending data.
