I'm no expert in shorting, but does anyone know how long you can generally keep a short position open, or is it indefinite (or is it dictated by the borrower)?

I've been tracking the CUV short position (as released by ASX) since 9 March - obviously a lot of the shorts have been outstanding for a while (at 9 March there were already 4.1m shorted shares - about 4.65m as of 16Apr). During March the big activity days were as follows:

- 10 March (+62k), high price of 16.82
- 11 March (+129k), high price of 16.66
- 12 March (+78k), high price of 15.83
- 13 March (+84k), high price of 14.88
- 19 March (+66k), high price of 15.12
- 25 March (+133k), high price of 18.94

Over this period to the end of March, shorts overall increased by over 500k, and the price only passed 19 at the very end of the month. This would have made it virtually impossible for gains to have been made by shorters during the period (at an overall level). There were a few days in April where positions were closed out (around 100k worth), but wow... we are still sitting on a huge stockpile of shorts, and the share price continues (apart from today) to show gains into the 20s. And yes, I also don't understand the long-term game here.

Anyway - food for thought. I have loaded up as much as possible.
