Shorts Played This Well

When a company puts out a weak set of numbers, shorters are in a position to really lean on the share price. They have already sold stock they don’t own, and when negative news lands they can sell more into the weakness. That creates extra supply in the market on top of normal holders who decide to sell after the announcement.

If there aren’t enough buyers to soak it up, the price falls harder and faster than it otherwise would. It becomes a bit of a feedback loop, bad news, share price drop, more short selling, even bigger drop. Shorters then have the option to buy back their stock at the lower price and pocket the difference.

It doesn’t mean the underlying result is any better than it looks, but it does mean the depth of the fall is being amplified by the games that short sellers can play.
