Column 1 0 2321 GMT [Dow Jones]--At current levels, Morningstar reckons South32 (S32.AU) is materially undervalued. The investment-research firm anticipates longer-term earnings improvement by the mining company as commodity prices recover and management tackles costs. Yet it also notes that despite a robust balance sheet, the share price is still being driven by the uncertainty of commodity prices at the moment. As such, while the recent halving of debt was from already low levels, Morningstar says it was appropriate since South32's assets aren't on balance among the industry's lowest cost operations. It has a A$2.60 fair-value estimate on the shares, which are now down 0.3% at A$1.525. ([email protected]; Twitter: @RobbMStewart)
