after all of this time and all the hindsight - most people still just don't get it

'our country' - in many ways means 'freedom' -------- and what was 'ours' is now 'not'

freedom isn't a thing that all of a sudden - whoosh, just evaporates

it normally seeps away and people let it seep away because they drop their guard, or they don't care or they don't think things are insignificant or they come up with 'reasons' or 'excuses' for government behaviour

the freedom and ownership of 'our country' has been seeping away for years -

my first real recollection of it was when some state governments began charging for entry to national parks

it was the principle of it --------- National parks are the heritage of all Australians - they are and were 'ours' - held in trust and managed by government - yes -

but, they were the property and heritage of all Australians -

the bullshit reason that came out - that they needed funding and that 'users' should pay

what was lost was that National parks were for ALL people - didn't matter if one visited or not -

so, there was the foot in the door - the user pays foot in that case - but, a removal of freedom of movement - a door open only to those who were prepared to bow down and pay an entrance fee to ----------- their own heritage.

Government got away with it - the people of Australia allowed it to happen.

From there the loss of freedom went on a journey through many processes - user pays was one, a whopper was 'security' -

so, more and more public lands were sent to 'Incs' - and the Incs - restricted access - and in some cases sold of crown property.

States and councils used 'security and safety' to fence highways - highways that went through crown lands on which pastoralists were given leases to run stock - they never owned the land at all -

but, when government fenced the highways - pastoralists locked gates - which you could only access if you got keys (to your land - held in trust by the crown) --- by a variety of processes like informing pastoralists and the like and getting a key -

but, overall Freedom took a huge hit

there was more - but, in the end, here we are - with foreigners controlling access to many areas today - Islands, beaches, leasehold properties -

now there's a thing about freedom ------- it's very very very easy to give up

but, it's dreadfully difficult to get back

so - what used to be 'our country' -------- is no more - why?

because Ozzies didn't fight for it - they just let it drift away

and now - yes ---------- normal Ozzies are becoming homeless - whilst foreign tourists get bnb beds ------ and similar things

the Australia that many of us loved - is no more.
