Understood — many of us have been caught by surprise at YAL’s strength during this ‘shoulder season’. YAL is not alone, of course, with the coal sector as a whole performing very strongly in recent times.
The best time to buy YAL, if you decide you want to, might well be in early September, when YAL goes ex its next dividend. In previous years the stock has dropped quite sharply at this time (by much more than the dividend value); last year, for example, it was trading at $5.51 on 4 September, immediately before it went ex dividend (37c, ff) on 5 September. A week later, on 12 September, it traded as low as $4.82, down by more than 13%, before recovering steadily over the following few months.
