Yes we had it so easy, 17% interest on bank housing loans. Bought secondhand furniture to furnish the place. Not a tradesman hired, did it all ourselves. Ran 10 year old bombs with zero safety rating, no aircon (in house or cars), crap coffee, get taken as a treat to the greek "milk bar" for a "mixed grill" (steak, sausage, egg, lamb's fry (liver)), sometimes to the local Chinese for a chow mein or a sweet & sour, black & white TV, moved interstate - bye friends (no mobiles, no internet, no computers, expensive landline calls), Hume Highway - single lane death trap, male (no females) names pulled out of a barrel for "national service" (off to 'Nam), We did join in anti-Vietnam marches though because we had a conscience.
One thing I clearly remember is tramming through Melbourne in my school cadet uniform with my fully functional .303 rifle and not a suspicious or frightened look from anyone.
Yes, we had it easy, but we didn't complain. We just coped.
