Fundamentally, companies that have "LESS" exposure to equity markets are "LESS" likely to make short term decisions that favour the objectives of equity holders, which in the long term may be positive to the performance of the company itself. Responding to the demands of equity holders on a short term basis, can and does result in a transition of funds away from Long term investment projects that attract a strong positive cash flow.
