Should felons be shunned by friends and family?

There is a thread on this forum about Abbott visiting Pell.
Apart from the Lib v Lab biases and anti catholic sentiment it raises an interesting moral question.

By definition conviced felons in prison are bad people. Thieves, rapists, murderers or whatever. What is the appropriate course of action by friends and family?

Should the felon be shunned and not visited or should contact be maintained. In my view a true friend does not endorse the crime of the felon but visits and gives support at this difficult time.

    Would you abandon a mate?
