Grid batteries are making money in short periods when pricing goes negative. The faster you can charge, the more money you can make per MWhr (eg. many events only 1hr). Li-ion is king for this. And, the li-ion industry has lobbied for shorter electricity trading periods to drive their advantage further (the bastards!). If you go thru that link I posted, you’ll see that all those big batteries are spec’d for charge/discharge rates of 4hrs or less (some at just 1hr).
For daily shifting or off grid, RTE is important. Redflow yields >10% points to Li-ion and some other tech on this. This means you need ~12% more solar panels for charging the battery than other tech.
I think these issues are also part of what your mate was referring to re “the commercials” not adding up. These negatives offset the positives of Redflow (fire, recyclability, temp range, cycles etc). It’s not just the capital cost.
