Frankly I would be more than happy for there to be more renters out there - makes my business better! That said I don't think anything should be encouraged/discouraged more that each individual makes their own decision on their own merits. Bottom line is someone has to own the asset and if it is an investor then at the end of the day the renter is going to pay for the privilege of living there as the investor will want to get a return over time.

As for the assertion about a nation thriving more just because they have more renters I think that is ridiculous - it would be more about the how the country is run full stop than whether they rent or buy.
