I've learned to never make investment or trading decisions based on how the market will react to a dividend announcement:
- If the dividend is lower than expectations... even by a little... the share price may tank. Good if you waited, bad if you bought the day before.
- If the dividend is better than expectations... even by a lot... the share price may gap up. Bad if you waited, good if you bought the day before.
How well do you understand what the market expects? How confident are you that the announcement will miss, meet, or exceed those expectations?
There are also heavy hitting contrary players ready to create traps by sending false signals with sharp buying or selling.
