dragut. Sure the world liked the idea of a partition of Palestine. The oil companies wanted the partition to appease the countries who held the oil reserves. Truman's advisors backed the partition as being in the US best interests, but with 100,000 Jews blockaded in Jerusalem, with no easy way to save them Truman decided the partition was not workable,
When Secretary of defense James Forrestal reminded Truman of the importance of Arab oil for US strategic interests, Truman said that, " he would handle the situation in the light of justice, not oil."
The US representative to the UN Warren Austin, announced that since the conflict in Palestine had proved that partition was no longer possible, the country should be placed under a UN trusteeship. So they didn't just neglect to partition, there was a conscious decision not to.

On March 28 Jerusalem was under siege. The Palestinians were winning and things looked hopeless. The defense of the city was in danger of collapse. This was the decisive war now. Ben Gurion insisted on a 1500 man assault, which meant dilution of fighters in other parts of Israel. On April 5 operation Nahshon was launched and by April 15 when Operation Nahshon ended, Jewish fighters had broken the siege and arrived with a convoy of food and weapons.
Dragut, it looks like the survival of Jews in Israel was a close thing.
