I paid $14 for full board (at the children's home I was in) out of a $21 pay, at my very first job.

It sucked.

I also had a long walk and two buses to catch each way.

A year after that I took on a house myself and helped look after my mother.

Somehow I managed to get ahead but it took many years. I was jealous of friends who lived at home for free and could save.

If you can teach your kids values and afford to give them a head start, good on you.
