That is an interesting read.
I fancy it could be used for material control as well. If each steel member going to a construction site was tagged with the mark number, the data could could be read together with a GPS reading as the item is placed in the laydown. Recovery for erection would then be simple. Currently stick on barcodes are used - the fade and/or fall off.
