    there is plenty of research that shows everyone lies. And they do so for a range of reasons - social acceptance, to get something they want, to avoid getting into trouble, because they have no moral compass. Narcissists also lie because they are essentially chameleons. What they believe in changes with circumstances and time so often they don’t even know they are lying.

    the issue is not whether people lie but how big it is and its purpose. Changing according to circumstances may be a problem if it is a cynical attempt to avoid a truth and for gain but if it’s based on facts then it may not be problematic

    there is a saying that people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. It’s hard for me to see how people can claim some things as facts while intentionally misleading others and then say “they always tell stories” or similar excuses to avoid something they wrote or did that was true but might later be unhelpful.

    I think we can look at recent politicians and identify very clearly those who have been guilty of outright lies.
