I know that Labor would not support such a move because it would minimise the influence of Trade Unions
on policy and Ministerial selection in future Labor Governments.

In a future Government wouldn't it be nice to have Malcolm Turnbull as AG , Kevin Rudd as Foreign Minister,
Jaques Nasser as Industry Minister etc.

Potential is there but do you trust a pollie to pick people on merit?
Whether its is getting your mates through preselection and winning a seat or just appointing your mates directly to ministerships, our problem is its still just jobs for mates.

You just have to look at some of the appointed government advisory boards, etc for that.
