If he is truly mentally ill, then why not feel sorry for him. Mental illness does not discriminate and especially for a professional sportsman, retirement can leave a massive void in your life. Throw in a few personal failures, possibly his battle with his sexuality (i am guessing) and why not feel sorry for the bloke. It doesn't matter how much money or success you have in life, mental illness doesn't discriminate and if he has it, then I feel for him. It doesn't mean we should feel more sorry for him than anyone else, but i am sure he wouldn't ask for that.
