The battery only stores the energy . You still have to generate the energy in the first place.
To be fair, existing nuclear has a reasonable service life yet. And, there's still plenty of new nuclear being built in the third world.
Renewables plus storage are not the complete solution
yet and we still need to keep the lights on in the meantime.
That said, we haven't come up with a decent solution for nuclear waste in all this time. To continue on as if it isn't a problem as opposed to addressing the issue is just madness. I'm actually a bit surprised the nuclear industry hasn't come up with a solution themselves in order to make their product more palatable. All they seem to do is make excuses and argue the point rather than coming up with a fix.
That's one thing about the renewable industry. It is identifying the problems and solving them as it goes. Particularly in the areas of waste. Unlike other industries that are just kicking the can down the road.........
Companies such as the Bill Gates backed Terrapower could be a big help here if they can get it right. They can potentially use the existing nuclear waste and reduce it to a much smaller amount. That's a step in the right direction as opposed to just dumping it in someone else's backyard and hoping it goes away.
