It would have been in the late '30s Dad worked for the then Dept. of Aboriginal Affairs resident on Palm Island.
I never heard of such barbarity from them but Mum insisted that the "stolen" generation was the "saved" generation. Even growing up after the war and living in the north where there were always aboriginals living close I ever heard of such goings on. The grandparents of many of today's troubled families who lived in town were honest hard workers. I knew the father of one one of our popular footballers and he was always a gentleman. Worked for a while at the youth detention centre for a while but gave it away, a big strong man, good footballer in his own right and father of a nationally known one he could garner no respect.
It is only since "sit down money" became a right that this have gone so terribly wrong.
