Marampa in in Sierra Leone is expected to become a significant new entrant into the global seaborne iron ore trade starting this year London Mining (LON:LOND) is planning expansion work at its Marampa iron ore project that will see the operation in Sierra Leone becoming a significant new entrant into the global seaborne iron ore trade starting this year.

Only a week ago, the company unveiled a 70 percent increase in the resource base of Marampa. It now boasts 906 million tonnes of iron ore at 32 percent Fe, with 379 million tonnes in the indicated category and 527 million tonnes inferred. It is now planning a fast track expansion to 3.6 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of sinter feed concentrate and an initial 12 mtpa of pellet feed production from Marampa, it said in an operational update.

A new mine plan will be completed as part of the preliminary feasibility study, which is expected to be completed in the first quarter of this year. Phase 1a production, meanwhile, is slated to begin in the third quarter of 2011, and first commercial export and sales are expected in the fourth quarter 2011.

Work on the haul road extension from Rogberi to Lunsar is to commence in the first quarter 2011 and is expected to be completed in the second quarter ahead of the wet season.
Construction of the new 18 kilometre road between Rogberi and Tawfayim is completed.

Construction of the port is scheduled to take place between the first and third quarter 2011.
