agreed - everything's stacked against it: size, complexity, high cost per mining unit, rising fuel costs, labour shortages, geographic isolation - current management is just the coupe de grace.
Struggling and failed gold miners are an interest topic of mine. Narrow-vein and/or high nugget orebody miners weigh heavy in this category - Norseman is a good example.
IMO these orebodies make good satelite deposits - much higher risk if supporting an entire operation. Unless the gold price sky-rockets off the scale - I don't see much hope of success.
