Value for money goes out the window in the scramble to get in.....

Urban planner Heidi Bischof and her partner, Mario Mattarelli, an information technology analyst, bought a three-bedroom Leichhardt residence for $800,000 in June.

The couple, who are in their mid-30s, had been looking for about a year. They had wanted to spend about $700,000 but realised they would struggle to find a house they liked at that price.

The couple engaged a buyers agent in February, who found a freestanding Federation house with one bathroom and no parking on 250 square metres.

The property was up for auction but Bischof and Mattarelli bought it before auction from agent Elizabeth Casamento, of Raine & Horne.

In the end,we didnt get a car space or a garage but at least its a street where you can get on-street parking, Bischof says. And we ended up with the north-south facing aspect, which was good.

The house is on a quiet street on an elevated block that has views of the city skyline.

The downside? Its under the flight path. Id rather not be but I guess you do get used to it, Bischof says. I figure theres a heap of other people who live in it and if they can live with it, then [so can we].

But well hopefully get double glazing and that might help a bit.
