Don't take the comparison too seriously with Doc but at least one theoretical physicist, probably the most famous one, had significant issues with one of the guiding tenets of quantum mechanics, and despite that most of his theories, if not all, have been proven to quite correct in the century or so since Albert first began to formulate them. And some of those experimental proofs have only occurred since technology has been developed enough to carry out the measurements.
