Hi Whytee. You are correct if EDE was cheaper and provided the same benefit then yes we would have gone with that. This isn't meant to be a Xypex vs EDE debate though I was trying to highlight that different products are out there and different applications will require different admixtures. Note that Xypex has two products. C-5000 is for durability and C-1000NF is to make the concrete "completely watertight and waterproof". Note that as far as I'm aware EC reduces porosity but does not make the concrete completely waterproof.
Before someone asks.... I've never used the C-5000 and have no idea if the two can be combined in one batch.
The research re pricing is about right. Xypex C-1000NF will add about $100/m3 to the batch depending on the batch size and location. Xypex will typically send an agent out with the concrete truck to perform tests on site as well which is part of the cost. Given EC are looking in the range of 4gal per cubic yard and I've seen some comments that EC is about $25/gal then the prices are in the same ballpark. Admixtures are an expensive game and builders will avoid if at all possible.
