The Finavera AquaBuoy isnt really like CETO at all. It's much more like OPT's "PowerBuoy". Bobbing on top of the surface, generating elecricity within the buoy and sending it via an undersea cable to shore. CETO doesnt do any of that, thankfully. After Finavera's test buoy sank, they saw the writing on the wall and gave up, at least for the medium to long term - like many other wave energy developers have in the past and will in the future.

OPT has had more success, but in the opinion of CETO fans, it still suffers from the same fundamental drawbacks. So far it has deployed a 40kw device (which is probably similar to CETO II) and will deploy a 150kw device towards the end of the year (CETO III is expected to be about 180kw). I can't see how a CETO III unit would not be more economical to deploy and maintain than an OPT "Powerbuoy" of a similar capacity. I'm open to arguments but they'd need to be pretty good to convince me otherwise!

I'm guessing you're fairly new the wonderful world of wave energy technologies (apologies if i'm wrong). I'm no technical expert but there are countless designs out there, some at a prototype level. Put them together and it looks as ugly as the bar scene from Star Wars. Have a look at this link below and wonder at the ridiculousness of some of them. It's a bit old (2007), and the photos of the CETO I device were probably taken in 2005 when they proved the concept of pumping water ashore at high pressure. There are plenty more devices than those in this presentation, but most are worse. Almost all will never be commercialised.

CETO is just so simple by comparison. Besides, more than one company can ultimately succeed - there's a lot of ocean and a lot of opportunities for multiple winners. Unless CNM stuff up monumentally like Finavera did (touch wood), no other company will be able "dump" on it's plans.
