Simon Marais, who runs Orbis Investment Management, has taken substantial profits in the recovery of the stock, selling out half of his portfolio of 15 listed trusts. "Once people start to buy the sector for dividend, it is time to sell," he says.

Institutional investors like Marais invested for the capital gains and among the stocks he sold is Macquarie CountryWide, which owns shopping centres. Marais says the stock has risen seven-fold.

Many of the worst hit stocks such as the Goodman Group and GPT Group have recovered strongly, he says.
