I was struck by the comment in this article about this guy's jet packs: "we won't sell it until its perfect, but perfect costs money." That seems to sum up the whole consideration of MJP's slow but steady path to commercialisation.
For something that takes you up high enough to kill you if you fall, perfect is pretty important. For something that takes your customers up there perfect is DEFINITELY essential. Ditto when it takes them over crowded public spaces.
This lack of appetite for personal risk seems to be one of the things that separates the inventors and developers of these jet packs and rocket belts and the companies that eventually build them commercially. Buck Rogers is all very good as a fantastic dream, and wouldn't we all love one to get around with, but I'm sure even Buck's unit was not a MkI version. Someone even then had to make sure it was both functional and reliable.
I'm quite happy that MJP wants to do things by the book, crossing the "T"s and dotting the "I"s to be quite sure everything is as reliable and safe as it is possible to make them. This will ensure that there will be no mishaps or incidents for this brand new technological innovation.
For instance, I never want to see the headline: "Chinese billionaire falls to death from penthouse apartment when jetpack fails - dozens killed below."

I think that short of cold-fusion powered jet engines the MJP approach is going to be the only route to personal flight that we are ever likely to see commercialised, except maybe as hobbyist gadgets like the jet-wing. It simply does not seem possible to carry enough fuel to fly a human's weight for longer than a few minutes.
While PoP (point-of-presence) drones equipped with stereo cameras will do maybe 75% of the surveillance jobs that currently require a helicopter, JetPacks will prove to be a lower cost alternative for many of the tasks that now require a helicopter.
