Trust me. I looked into the system. Unfortunately it's not that easy to get assistance when you hit a soft patch. My request denied.
I grilled them deeply as to what circumstances are required to qualify and what other support payments are in place. The truth isn't comforting to any tax paying Australian. I concluded the system is geared to disincenticise you from looking for work. The more you try the more you start losing payments, which are better than nothing, but far from keeping anyone afloat.
The system is geared towards the have nots who never intend having. Then the welfare system opens up and offers you the lot. It pays to have a wander around the Centrelink website and pretend you became unemployed or a single parent. It's an eye opener.
