    If you want a deep answer, I would say it goes back to the selfish gene.
    scarce resources and a need to preserve our gene pool.
    If resources were not scarce then there would be no need to determine who was more deserving of them than anybody else.
    But if you have to make a decision, then you would probably choose your family over a stranger.
    the situation in australia at the moment is that we are rich with resources.
    Poor people can see this so they want to come here.
    It all boils down to scarce resources, an ever increasing population and competition for those scarce resources (as other posters have alluded too.)
    So the brief answer to the question about why deserve more than the people coming here by boat is this -
    the more selfish I am and the less I give to others the better things will be for me and my progeny.
