Fidan Kucuktepe claimed to have amassed $110,000 in her Ascot Vale housing commission flat by living frugally and saving nearly everything she earned.

The court heard Ms Kucuktepe had been variously employed as a seamstress, cleaner and security guard since her arrival from Turkey to Australia in 1985.

She said as well as wages, the money was made up of government benefits and gambling winnings and it was kept between the mattress and base of her bed.

She alleged that in late 2001 her brother, Sinan Yildirim, came over while she was out and took the money.
