The SPX (or Dow) futures are not actually predicting either the open or close.
The futures market predicts at any given point in time the likely value of the SPX (Dow) index value for a specific date (eg Dec 08) in the future. The change in the that value is used as a guide to the likely change in the spot (today/tonight) value of the index if the physical stockmarket were open.
