re: sir joh/ jury out on sir joh The usual sophistry from our friend Yak and others who cry "he was great for Queensland"...
So was another certain gentleman who made the trains run on time and built wonderful buildings in Berlin...remember him?
Fact is that Joh ran one of the most corrupt governments in the history of Australia and if you were aboriginal, a union member or if you dared to believe in anything resembling civil liberties you faced up to Joh's politicised police force. Come to think of it there wasn't much in the way of the public service that wasn't politicised by Joh. This often happens when governments are too long in power as was Joh's as a result of the gerrymander (introduced by Labor).
Of course there's a lesson here when we think of the Federal Govt. Here's another party been in power too long and the consequence has been politicisation of the public service just as in Joh's day. You have only to look at intelligence over Iraq and the children overboard for examples. Small wonder that Howard is increasingly execrated just as Joh was by increasing numbers....
Long may they both rot....
