MD sees cost savings for construction in fall ins teel price for the big M Construction is about to begin on the $400 million Moolarben Coal Mine near Mudgee.
Contractors have started fencing off the site, ahead of earthworths beginning next month.
The operator of Moolarben, Felix Resources, says construction of the mine will take 14 months.
Its managing director, Brian Flannery, says the project will create about 220 jobs.
"Most of that work will be building the coal preparation plant and train loading system. So there are various trades, there'll be concrete work required and steel and electrical trade-type work," he said.
He says falling steel prices are expected to help lower the cost.
"Prices of steel work are coming down in recent times with the slowdown in the economy, so we may be able to find some savings here and there on that," he said.
The project has been delayed by action in the NSW Court of Appeal by the neighbouring Ulan Coal Mine.
