Man jailed for sending bullets to Gillard

AN 81-year-old man has been jailed for sending bullets and detonators to politicians including Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott and former Queensland premier Anna Bligh.

John Gilbert Gordon mailed the explosives, along with threatening letters, between 2007 and 2010, the Brisbane District Court heard on Thursday.

The letters included threats to kill or blow up the addressees, who also included then-opposition leader Kevin Rudd, Catholic Archbishop of Brisbane John Battersby, the head of the Reserve Bank in Sydney and the chief executive officers of the Commonwealth and Westpac banks.

None of the letters made it to their intended recipients, but were instead opened by administration or mail room staff, the court heard.

Gordon, who has no mental health problems, had sent the mail because he was angry about various political and commercial issues.

In several letters he threatened to bomb refugees, said he had poisoned the water supply of a motel he believed housed asylum seekers, and asserted the Vatican would be destroyed.

Gordon was arrested after forensic analysis of one of the letters revealed the impression of his name from other correspondence written on the same notepad.

Police raided his house in Brisbane and found a cache of weapons, as well as bullets and detonators that matched those sent in the mail.

Gordon pleaded guilty to 12 charges, including six of using a postal service to send explosives.

Justice Brian Deveraux described Gordon's behaviour as "cowardly" and said he had no choice but to send him to jail.

He sentenced him to two-and-a-half years' jail and ordered he be released after serving eight months.

Gordon's 90-year-old fiancee was not in court for the sentencing.
