here are other matters troubling world leaders ? energy security and energy costs being the biggest, highlighted by unrest in the Middle East and the rising oil prices. Concerns about future jobs growth, food scarcity and water problems are also driving the policy initiatives. Thankfully, although some of these so called mega-trends have different causes, they have a common solution ? alternative sources of energy, resource management, and a reduction in pollution.
The added urgency brought about by geo-politics and energy security has been made clear by reports from the UK and China over the weekend. The UK is using the oil threat posed by the uprising in Libya as added incentive to accelerate its move towards alternative energy sources, which is to be outlined in its National Carbon Plan to be released this week. A similar motivation ? that of energy security and pricing ? will underpin the release of the European Commission?s energy efficiency strategy this week, as well as its energy roadmap to 2050.
