I do a report of all ASX-listed stocks by a bunch of different metrics (you can get this from the Comsec advanced search tool)
Then I filter the results which gets me about 60 stocks, you can eliminate about 2/3 of these right away due to immediately obvious issues. Then it's a case of reading the annual reports to find the safest buys which have the best upside potential (through profit growth or stock appreciation)
