    Yes you are right Plough basalt is a very common rock; good compressive strength low permeability and would make an ideal base for the Northern ramp. So why is the ramp gone?

    The answer I believe is the rock mass is not intact; fissures and other discontinuities can channel ground water (aquifiers) causing seepage & high localised pore pressures; slip planes then develop as shown in the image by Dr S previous post (dated 23/7/2015); many slip planes are evident in the image; my opinion only. The failure to keep the pit dry during the C & M period likely contributed to the failure of the Northern ramp and the Eastern wall; in my opinion only.
