Not sure where you are going with this Holdonman , I am happy holding RED and may even add to my position , we know what happened before 2014 was a major cock-up but the current management I feel have a handle on the situation.
The slip could have been clay or loose breccia coming down and slipped off the basalt/parent rock lubricated by water , and what you are seeing in the photo of the slip face is the more competent rock remaining behind possibly basalt as you mentioned.
Really it is conjecture for both of us (more so for me as I am not a geo ) as we do not have the facts maybe you would be better contacting the management to get their view.
