HappyCats; as you said ground water is likely flowing to lake Manit due to gravity flow from the surrounding hills above the open pit. Also the possibility of karstic limestone (in some cracked / eroded form) may influence the speed of ground water flow. The Northern & Eastern basalt parts of the open pit may have in my opinion lower permeability which could result in an increase of hydraulic pressures. The one outstanding observation from images posted (ASX Oct 2014 pg 3 & Jan 2015 satellite image) was the amount of water in the open pit; possibly causing an increase in hydraulic water pressures on the open pit walls.
In my opinion they should not have let the open pit water rise so high during the C & M & post C & M period; significant damage to the open pit via slip mechanism has occurred; my opinion only.
A seemingly simple observation however costs of clean up maybe an extra burden; my opinion only.
