Thanks glenso - I'll need to have a look at my EW text as while I knew of the rule of alternation I thought that only really applied to Waves 2 and 4 - well that's what I was taught anyway.
I find EW is the greatest tool I have in my charting arsenal, but often also the most frustrating because it is so subjective. While it can be really easy to look at a completed wave cycle and clearly see the main waves, when they are unfolding it's much harder to determine - ie is this a W4 or WA, is this the start of a W1 or perhaps just a sub-wave 4 of a WC?
Anyway, thanks for your comments - I'll think more about them
