    Hi ,Milo.
Been in the auto industry for near 50 years, some time as an insurance assessor and seen the lot. Seen court cases where to my amazement the car entering the stream of traffic was at fault... So it's not so cut and dry. But don't lose any sleep though. The claims dept have seen it all before. They will work on the law of averages, probably favoring your son. Depending on your ins co the cost of your repairs will be covered. If however you are not satisfied with their deliberations they are bound to pay "reasonable" costs of recovery.... ie court costs.
All you need is the reg, to persue a claim . if the "offending" vehicle, If however you hypotheticaly go to court and win there is nothing on earth that would make the offender make a claim against his insurer if he is insured at all. He could have a $1000.00 or so excess.
Any way make it easy on your self make a claim pay your excess and hope you get it back.
A bit of advice from an old bloke......NEVER get on the road without insurance
The young bloke WILL learn from this.
    Good luck.
