I have spoken to the NZX about these large trades that appear pre-open on the NZX. They tell me they are after hours/hangover trades from the previous evening in response to trading in the final hour of the ASX i.e after 5pm NZ time.
They also said others are often cross trades between clients of the same broker (hence they can take place before the market opens).
So, on the day they are posted, they aren't necessarily a guide to sentiment that day
