I agree the Queenslander would have to be the most efficient home for air circulation and sun protection. I would definitely prefer a home with a deep wrapped around verandah. It also stops the windows from being constantly sprayed by rain, less cleaning!. And when the rain is intermittent you can still keep them open.
But, I bet even the humble Queennslander is being bombarded with air cons. I still believe it is a want more than a need. I do appreciate that some days in Perth it can get extremely hot and if there's no afternoon sea breeze it can be uncomfortable.
As for smart meters. I did hear that they wanted trials in WA to remotely turn off air cons. No chance! People may have elderly sick occupants or have been working outdoors all day and want some relief. The issues is more a case of infrastructure not having kept up with growth. The story of our state! The Gov compensates by making the people the scape goats under a guise of 'for our good.'
