The answer is smart people, not smart meters.

It's not hard to work out what's going to skyrocket your bill. High wattage and high use would do it. Our so called modern lives contribute immensely. Recentl a 32 degree day occurred after some cool weather with evening breezes. On went the air cons in surrounding houses. Really, hardly a reason to turn them on. The ducted refrigerative systems are not for the novice. A 10 outlet can rate at 15 Kw. Use one of them indiscriminately and your power bill will skyrocket. Add a pool pump. A couple of plasmas for the kids. 240v downlighting @50w is prominent.

Also, people are ignorant and expect a free ride. Read a letter in the paper yesterday. Someone complaining that a supply charge is still charged if someone doesn't use power whilst away on holidays or uses less by conserving. I believe in WA we pay approx $30 for 60 days. That's 50c/day for all the infrastructure between the plant and your meter box. And in WA we must have one of the cheapest power at 22c/Kw. They whine coz up to 3 yrs ago we paid 12c. What more do people want?
