Had a smart meter put in 2 years ago as part of a Perth trial. Synergy got cold feet. Came and removed it before the trial started stating that it wasn't the preferred option, education was. They didn't elaborate.
But...if it can make them money by charging more for peak and less for off peak then they may reconsider I suppose. As others have pointed out...only the nocturnals may benefit...the main thing is that it looks like they're giving you a choice. You can imagine it in apartments if people started using their washing machines/dishwashers and dryers at 2am...complaints galore.
Maybe in the suburbs we can use electric lawn mowers, hit the cheap powered floodlights and mow at night...lol
